Tattoo Removal Q & A

How effective is laser tattoo removal?

If you are suffering from tattoo regret, laser tattoo removal is the most effective method to eliminate your tattoo ink without scarring. It is safe for all skin tones and works on virtually all inks. In just a few laser sessions, your skin can be ink-free. … Ink Composition.

Is laser removal of tattoos painful?

Laser tattoo removal typically does involve some level of pain. That said, many say that it hurts less than they expected. It’s a common belief that tattoo removal is excruciating, yet most patients say that the sensation of removal is comparable to having a tattoo applied.

Can a tattoo be removed in one session?

The good news is that a tattoo can be removed from anywhere that a tattoo can be placed. This doesn’t mean that the process will always be as quick and easy, though. Depending on the placement of the tattoo, you may find that additional sessions will be required before you notice the results you are looking for.

How can I speed up tattoo removal?

Drink more water.

Hydration is key during the tattoo removal process. It is recommended that you begin drinking plenty of water in the weeks leading up to your first tattoo removal treatment. The water in your body plays a key role in cell regeneration. Your skin cells will regenerate faster with proper hydration, which will enable the skin to break down the ink in your pigment faster.

Work out more.

Working out increases circulation throughout the body. Good circulation enables your skin cells to reap the rewards of proper oxygenation. Oxygen, like water, is crucial in cell regeneration and healing. The laser treatments will work to break down the ink that has dyed your pigment. Rebuilding the pigment, though, will be the work of your own body. Give it all the tools it needs.

Why are tattoos “permanent?”

When you get a tattoo, a tiny needle punctures your skin very rapidly, delivering minute deposits of ink into your dermis. The dermis is the second layer of your skin just under your epidermis.

Modern tattoo machines are high-speed and can puncture your skin as many as 3,000 times in just one minute. Each puncture damages your skin, triggering your body to respond by sending white blood cells to the site. Those white blood cells gather any foreign particles and flush them into your bloodstream, eventually reaching your liver and then exiting your body.

In the case of tattoo ink, many of the particles are too large for your white blood cells to handle. They remain in your dermal layer and are visible through your epidermis.

What causes tattoos to fade?

Over time, tattoo ink can become blurred if the original tattoo was placed too deeply in your skin. Or if you gain or lose a significant amount of weight, your tattoos can become distorted or faded.

Tattoos can also fade due to improper aftercare. It’s important to keep a new tattoo site clean and covered with antibacterial ointment and to avoid picking at scabbed or flaking skin during the healing process.

Excessive sun exposure can also fade tattoo ink over time, as can exposure to strong chemical cleaning products, gasoline, or other harsh chemicals.

Tattoo Removal Post Care

Immediate fading of the tattoo is temporary, and the tattoo will rebound in appearance.

It is best to avoid any strenuous physical activities like working out or playing sports for 48 hours immediately following your laser tattoo removal treatment.

*Potential Side Effects of Laser Tattoo Removal

Swelling – is normal. Should it occur you can gently ice the area intermittently for 10 minutes at a time with a 5-minute break in between. Depending on the size and location of your tattoo, this can last for 3-5 days. For larger tattoos resting will help with swelling.

Redness – your skin may become red directly after the treatment. This is caused by minimal pinpoint bleeding. Redness indicates your top layer of skin is still very sensitive. It should progressively get better within 7-10 days.

Itchiness – is common but not everyone experiences it. The healing process can cause itchiness. It can begin a few hours after your treatment and can last up to six weeks after your treatment. You can take an over-the-counter antihistamine to relieve some of the discomfort but DO NOT SCRATCH the area.

Blistering – it will look like a bubble on the top layer of skin either within or around the tattoo. DO NOT burst blisters. They are protecting your skin and popping a blister can result in infection if not done properly.

Crusting, dryness, and scabbing – can be common once the blisters subside and scabs start to form. It can make the tattoo look darker but once the area heals it will appear lighter. It is important the area isn’t disturbed or irritated.

*Follow Up Care/Information for the Treated Area

Keeping the treated area covered from sunlight for the next 30 days and 30 days prior to your next treatment is critical to ensure your skin heals properly. Always wear sunscreen and keep covered from sun exposure.

Hair in the treatment area may fall out but will grow back after a few months.

The tattoo will fade over the next month.

Treatment can be scheduled for 8-10 weeks after. This will give the skin in the treated area the necessary time to be completely recovered from the treatment. The ink continues to fade during the entire treatment period.

The exact number of treatments depends on many factors and is not easy to predict.

The success of the laser tattoo removal will vary from one tattoo ink to another and some colors are resistant to treatment.

It is important to drink as much as possible daily to help your body dispose of the ink through your lymphatic system.

*Post Care Treatment for Colors

Along with all the regular post-care expectations, treating the color in your tattoo will result in a different impact on your skin.

Treating the color is done with a different laser setting than the black ink areas of your tattoo.

The follow-up time between appointments will now need to be 10-12 weeks as your skin will take longer to rebound from the treatment and the ink will continue to fade during the entire treatment period.

It is extremely important that you keep your skin hydrated to minimize experiencing dryness. This will minimize any crusting or scabbing that can occur from dry skin. You can use Aquaphor or similar products to keep the area moist and protected. Authorized Distributor of Skinceuticals in Las Vegas.
